Tech Tip: Using Geocoding to Target Mailings

Mail Manager and Mail Manager Full Service users interested in sending targeted mailings to customers within a given radius can use the Geocoding feature in the software to generate latitude and longitude data during the ZIP + 4™ encoding process. Mail Manager and Mail Manager Full Service can also provide geocoding expressions to help identify addresses within a radius; nearest location; and location distance.

By using the Z4 Latitude and Z4 Longitude data fields, each address encoded will receive the global latitude and longitude of the central point within the encoded ZIP Code™.

Additionally, Geocoding expressions (Tools > Modify Presorted Records) can generate geocoded-specific data that can be useful to end-user customers. Some examples of these expressions include:

  • AddressDistance and AddressDistanceGeocoding - Reveal the number of miles that separate a record from either a specified ZIP Code or a set of latitude/longitude coordinates.
  • AddressinRadius - Will use a user-supplied ZIP Code and mileage radius to scan every address within the list, returning a true value for each record within the specified mileage range.
  • NearestLocationList - Analyzes and compares all records within a list to a secondary data file of locations (data must be provided by the user) to provide the user with a list of the nearest possible results by location name.

To learn more about Geocoding and Geocoding expressions, read the Geocoding Technical Document located in the BCC Customer Portal. And for questions about expressions not listed in that document, contact BCC Support at (800) 624-5234 or tech@bccsoftware.com.
